I can confirm that as I write (19h00) I am 80 miles from Plymouth. I have following winds the rest of the passage. To make it easier for all, I will time my arrival next to the fueling berth at the Plymouth Yacht Haven Mountbatten, Plymouth to be at 18h00 on 29 June 2010. I have both time and fuel to spare, to control the arrival time. I will call Carol at 15h00 and at 16h00 to confirm. I have already spoken to PYH so they are expecting me. The trip out took 17 days, covering 1452 miles. The return trip will take 15 days 6 hours covering 1348 miles. Worst performance on outward trip was beating in strong winds, making less than 50 miles in a day even though we were covering 90 miles to be followed by only achieving 25 miles to windward the next day in a virtual calm. On the return passage, the worst day was 26 miles in a drifter with the best days run of 107 miles under full sail mostly on a reach (wind from the side). This was the day before the gaff fitting broke. The best day downwind under Parasail alone achieved 99 miles. The strange thing about it all, is that once the gaff fitting failed, we could no longer beat effectively to windward. Given 80 percent of the route after the Azores would be windward we may well have ended up in Bermuda?
